On a dog-day in late August 2011, a flat-black primered and pinstriped Rat-rod station wagon flew into Old River Park, the twangy staccato of a Danelecto guitar over a jungle-beat of drums reverberated from within. The car door swung open and a mysterious goateed man staggered out reeking of PBR and Lucky Strikes. He pulled a tiki torch from the back, plunged it into the ground, and lit it with his Zippo. With trembling tattooed hands, he placed the swaying hula girl statuette from his dashboard, a mai-tai paper umbrella, a tattered post card from Trader Vic’s, and a Dick Dale 45 at its base in a make-shift alter. Kneeling before it he removed his fez, clutched it to the bosom of his floral print shirt, and with a single tear appearing on his sunburned cheek from beneath his Ray-Bans, he cried out to the gods; “Festiki III is dead. Long live Festiki IV!”

No moa Festiki??? Bummer dude…Haven’t missed one yet! Hands down best fest of the summer! Deeply saddened to hear the news. : ( Wish I had a bunch of land, I would host it!

As a mid-western Tiki-phile, I was looking forward to my first Festiki. Oh well. Thank you for all of your efforts, I hope it works out for 2012.

Saw them last summer at the LC Pavillion in Columbus and they were righteous! Happy they finally received the recognition.

Toby-
So you are surfing the Olentangy these days?
Not only have I had surfing lessons in Kauai, I recently had lunch in Malibu at one of Laird Hamilton’s fave restaurants. We’re practically bro’s! Laird and I do have one thing clearly in common – we each married up.
As for surfing on Lake Erie, watch this site for news soon re: a Surf Ohio event featuring the awesome documentary film titled “Out of Place,” about that very thing! You will love it – it’s rad.

I just found out about this festival on the Retroroadmap site. I live in Ohio, can’t believe I’ve missed out on this all these years. I can’t wait to be there for the 2011 one.

Do you actually surf? I have been surfing the Great Lakes (and the oceans too) for years now, but live in Columbus.

Are you aware of the surfing in Lake Erie?
