Surf Ohio 40 Years - Columbus - Olentangy River Tee

When I think “High Street,” there are only about ten thousand memories that come to mind.  How could I ever forget the 1980’s on ‘home game’ Saturdays? After a day of some head-knockin’ in the Ol’ Horseshoe on the banks of the Olentangy, nothing was better than heading up High for a night at the former Shriner hangout, Ledo’s Lounge.  The doorman, an old high school chum, waves you past the line and, bam!, into the heat, the humanity, the Motown of it all. Daisy Dukes and halter tops. Parachute pants and pastel t-shirts. Flip-flops, if you could dance in them. Wedging your way up to the bar to place an order was big entertainment in itself, and I mean that in a good way.

Man, icy cold Rolling Rocks for a buck. The Temptations.  Young Rascals. Shondells. Nonstop and wall-to-wall. It’s the only place I ever felt like I was living a Hollywood musical.  “Paradise by the Dashboard Lights” hits the DJs turntable, and 300 people spontaneously break into song, guys vs. gals. Wish I had it on film, though I’m pretty sure you had to be there.  And if you hadn’t been dragged out onto the dance floor by midnight, it meant check your pulse. Or do another shot of Schnapps. Heck, I’d buy a round right now.
The good news is that the ‘80’s are back, and Ledo’s still stands on High Street.  Next time you go, you can sport your 40th Anniversary Olentangy Masters Surfing Classic tee, accepted attire in similarly fine establishments worldwide.  Tell the guy at the door you know me. He might just waive the cover charge.
